“Holy” — What Does It Mean?

Holiness is a unique felt presence quality of an object, place, person, idea, or action. For something or someone to be holy simply means that it or they are in a state of resonance that is harmonious with the wholeness of God.

By this definition, God is holy by its very nature. It is the fundamental force of unison we arise from. Other things may or may not be holy, depending on a variety of factors. Take a book, for example—one that’s considered sacred. It’s holy only if it is being used in a way that is in harmony with the wholeness of God. There is unfortunately a long and sad history of basically every sacred text being used to justify blatantly wrong actions. In these cases, the books cannot be considered truly holy, because they are being used in a way that creates disharmony with the fundamental melody of life. Outside of objects, I may or may not be holy depending on my state of mind. My actions may or may not be holy depending on their alignment with God’s wholeness. All of this can be taken to say that holiness is both an internal property (something’s capacity for harmony with the divine) as well as a relational property (how something is currently resonating relative to God’s wholeness).

If I am to keep my actions in harmony with the divine, I must strive to align and maintain my own personal resonance with wholeness. Developing a deep sense for when I am whole and when I am fragmented has been a powerful skill that I am continuously developing. It is this sense of wholeness that I worship. In that state, I can recognize and take advantage of the opportunities presented to me from a place of love and gratitude. Sometimes I feel drawn to odd things for reasons I can’t explain. But when I know I am whole, I can trust that like is recognizing like and that my primary harmony is supporting and enhancing the melody of life, even if I can’t see the entirety of the big picture. One of my favorite ways to explore this connection is through singing harmony. This is one place in my life where I can consistently skillfully resonate in wholeness.

To be whole and content is an act of defiance in a world where there is power and wealth in fragmenting others. To love yourself and others unconditionally rebels against those who would convince you that you are broken so they can profit from selling you the cure. Acting from a place of wholeness makes you harder to manipulate, allowing you true choice. Because of this, I consider wholeness to be the fountain of freedom, desire, power, and responsibility.
